The goals of the Bowie Library Media Center include:
|
Instilling a lifelong love of reading and learning for
both the adults and children at Bowie; |
|
Teaching information literacy skills to all students, K-6; |
|
Integrating information literacy skills throughout the
elementary curriculum; |
|
Supporting the technology and curriculum needs of the
staff and students. |
Information Literacy
According to the
American Library Association's Presidential Committee on Information Literacy:
Final Report, "to be information literate, a person must be able to
recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate,
and use effectively the needed information" (1989). The report goes on to
discuss the importance of teaching students a learning process that focuses on:
 |
"knowing when they
have a need for information |
 |
identifying
information needed to address a given problem or issue |
 |
finding needed
information and evaluating the information |
 |
organizing the
information |
 |
using the information
effectively to address the problem or issue at hand." |
The Bowie library strives to integrate
information literacy skills within each grade's
curriculum. Bowie's students in every grade level conduct at least two research
projects in the library. Before each research project, the students develop their
research plan using The
Big Six Problem Solving Process. During their research projects, students
utilize both the electronic and print resources available through the Library
Media Center program. Many of these resources are available at both home and
school via Bowie's Library Links content-rich gateway web sites.

Library Schedule
The Bowie Library Media Center has an open-door policy. Students
may visit the LMC at any time during the school day, as well as before and after
school. The LMC uses a flexible schedule.
K-2nd visit the library weekly; 3rd-6th
teachers sign up for library times on an as-needed basis. This flexible schedule allows younger students to develop routine use of the LMC
and its resources while allowing larger blocks of time for special projects.

Electronic Resources
Bowie students have access to the online
electronic resources listed below. These resources are available throughout the
school on Bowie's networked computer stations.
