The purpose of Bowie's library is to provide materials and services to meet
the educational needs of its students and the instructional requirements of its
faculty, as well as to provide enrichment for leisure hours.

Curricular Support
The main focus of the library program is
teaching information literacy skills to all students, K-6.
The librarian collaborates with teachers to integrate information literacy
skills as
students complete short-term and long-term assignments. The librarian also provides reading and research guidance
for students, selections from the collection for classroom and individual use,
and bibliographies on diverse topics and reading levels.

Extra/Co-Curricular Support
The library supports extracurricular activities such as Science Fair, Invention
Convention, PTA's Cultural Arts Fair, and Kindergarten Round Up. With the Bowie
faculty and the PTA, the library also promotes motivational reading programs,
including the Texas Bluebonnet Award, the PTA's summer reading program, a winter
reading program, Accelerated Reader, Children's Book Week, and
author/illustrator visits.

Collection Development
The librarian maintains the collection by ordering materials requested by
students and faculty, materials found in printed reviews in a variety of
professional journals, and materials reviewed at monthly meetings of all RISD
librarians. A regular program of weeding out-of-date materials and of repairing
worn items also helps to keep the collection current.

Library Hours
The Bowie library is staffed by a professional librarian. Library hours are 7:30
a.m.- 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, except on days with staff meetings. All students from kindergarten through
sixth grade are encouraged to check out books from Bowie's library. Each book a
student reads strengthens and improves his/her reading skills and helps to build
a lifelong habit of reading.

Policy
Books and magazines are overdue when not returned by 4:00
p.m. on the date shown on the date due card.
Library privileges are suspended when materials become overdue or an item is
damaged. Fines are assessed for lost and damaged library books. Library privileges resume after the item is returned
or the fine is
paid. (The fine will not exceed the replacement cost of the item.) Students will
be notified once a week of outstanding library fines and overdue books.

Lost and Damaged Library
Materials Policy
RISD policy is that payment of replacement cost must be made on materials that
are badly damaged or lost. This replacement cost includes cost of processing the
book for library circulation. The librarian will determine when damage warrants
the assessment of replacement cost. When materials are two weeks overdue, they
are considered lost, and a request for payment will be sent home. When lost
items are paid for, the transaction is closed. There will be no refunds if the
book is later found.
