In a poll of 162 3rd-6th graders, Fred the dog received 118 votes or 73% of the vote to Clarence who received 44 votes for 27%. Clarence was not bothered by the poll saying that "The race is still young and I plan to get out and visit with the voters this week. My message is clear, I have the experience." Fred the Dog responded to the results by thanking his supporters and stating "I am humbled by the show of support. I promise to wipe out the concept of luck and replace it with a concept of study and hard work to be successful." The results broke down this way: Boys: Fred: 76% Clarence: 24% Girls: Fred: 71% Clarence: 29% By Grade: 3rd Grade: Fred: 65% Clarence: 35% 4th Grade: Fred: 62% Clarence: 38% 5th Grade: Fred: 73% Clarence: 27% 6th Grade: Fred: 83% Clarence: 17% Were the election held today, Fred would receive 49 electoral votes to Clarence's 7. 37 votes are needed to win. Both candidates are expected to campaign heavily this week. BREAKING!!! October 18,2004 Candidates issue statements: CLARENCE THE CAT: My opponent has accused me of being old and rusty. Many of you have notice that I appear to be a little worn around the edges. Let me assure you that the rust I have comes from years of loyal service, standing in the rain, being in a damp atmosphere, all for the good of the people I served and brought luck to. It is not contagious and it has been sealed to prevent anyone form getting rust on them. My opponent looks smooth, but underneath that slick exterior he has rusted all the way through from years of neglect. Just recently he was re-painted to fool you into thinking that he looks nice. Boys and girls, underneath that paint is a rusted out shell of a dog. I have controlled my rust and wear it proudly as a badge of honor. My opponent Fred has chosen to hide his. Remember, test scores have gone up since I've been here. Ms. Payne has said that. I have made an impact and I want to continue to serve. Serve proudly with me, Clarence the Cat. FRED THE DOG: I came into this election with a positive message, one of hope and optimism. My opponent would try to paint me as something I am not. I represent change and that scares him. For too long the students of Skyview have felt that luck was all there is. I tell you that study and hard work play a more important part in your education. As your mascot, I will make sure that you have the materials you need to succeed. I am the dog to lead this school into 2005. Change is good. While it is true the scores have gone up since Clarence has been here, I wonder how much of a role he really played? I have heard rumors that I have fleas. While this is sometimes true, I assure you that during the winter they are gone and you can feel secure that I am "flea-free." Vote for me, Fred the Dog.
NEWS FROM OCTOBER 20, 2004 CLARENCE THE CAT HITS THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL. Trailing by more than 50 points in some polls, Clarence the Cat has begun to visit some states to drum up support. So far his visits have been limited to The states of Bunch, Little, and Simpson where support for his campaign was weak. Clarence reported a good response as he handed out bookmarks and again drove home the point that things have been good at Skyview while he has been here. Clarence plans further state visits during the week as he unveils his new plan to keep Skyview growing and improving. FRED THE DOG TO VISIT THE CAFETERIA. In a move some in his campaign feel is unwise, Fred the Dog will visit the Cafeteria for lunch with the student tomorrow. Fred feels that the cafeteria food is an important issue and one he wants to improve on. Fred says that he can improve the quality of the food, but Clarence disputes this saying, "The library mascot is not in control of some things. The cafeteria is one of them. My opponent is being less than honest if he tells you that he can do anything about the cafeteria." Fred replied that this kind of negative thinking is why Clarence would not make a good mascot. "We can make a difference in all that we do here at Skyview if we have the right attitude. I am a can-do. My opponent is a can-not."
NEW OCTOBER 21 Electoral Vote predictions based on the poll.
BREAKING NEWS OCTOBER 25th FRED THE DOG CRITICIZES CLARENCE'S DANCE APPEARANCE Clarence the Cat appeared Friday night at the White T dance. He was seen shaking paws and talking to supporters. Fred the dog issued this statement. "Clarence's appearance at the dance was a blatant attempt to persuade voters by trying to prove he is in touch with the kids of Skyview. I don't think he came for honest reasons. Clarence is not in touch with the kids of Skyview. They are not interested in how well he dances, they are interested in the changes he will make in the school and they support they will receive. My opponent has offered nothing but luck. I offer change and a better way of doing things." CLARENCE THE CAT CLAWS BACK "For my opponent to attack me for going to the dance is beyond belief! I went to the dance solely to support my fellow Skyview kids and to relax after a hard campaign. I think my opponent, who did NOT show up at the dance, is trying to twist around the fact the he was not there and I was. Skyview students understand that I can be a valuable asset to the and when the benchmark scores come out after this week, everyone will know that I am responsible for the increase. As Principal Payne said at morning assembly, we are #1. This happened while I was the mascot. My opponent can do nothing but make empty promises, I have results."
OCTOBER 26, 2004 POLL RESULTS SHOW A BIG CHANGE IN VOTER PREFERENCE. A small sample poll done Monday shows Clarence the Cat making significant gains on Fred the Dog. A poll of five classes has Clarence with 40.9% of the popular vote and Fred with 59.1%. This is a drop of 13.9% for Fred and puts the race in some doubt. Projected electoral votes also got closer with Clarence carrying 8 votes to Fred's 11 votes with 4 votes undecided. Clarence attributes his gains to aggressive campaigning and to "getting our message out." Fred says "The only poll that counts is the final vote and that will be a win for me."
CAMPAIGN UPDATE October 29, 2004 CLARENCE CLAIMS SILVER CUP VICTORY Clarence the Cat is claiming partial responsibility for the recent Skyview Silver Cup award. "Although I am not directly responsible for Skyview winning this award, I must point out that I was the mascot in charge when the award was won" the candidate stated. Ms. Payne, who has not made an official endorsement of a candidate, could not be reached for comment. Clarence has claimed from the beginning of the campaign that he has led Skyview into a streak of luck not seen for many years. "Ask any classroom that I have visited. They will tell you that their scores have improved" said Clarence. At a weekly press briefing Clarence introduced his latest supporter: SpongeBob Squarepants. Mr. Pants left a variety of bookmarks for the classrooms Clarence visited. Clarence said at the briefing "I hope everyone gets out to vote next week and be sure to vote for Clarence for a bright future at Skyview."
FRED THE DOG PICKS UP A KEY ENDORSEMENT. Fred the Dog today picked up an endorsement from the world champion Boston Red Sox. A spokesman for the Red Sox said, "Fred has the same spirit that carried the Red Sox to their miracle finish. He believes in himself and can hit left or right. We fully endorse Fred for Skyview Mascot."
Fred the Dog at a recent Sox game (Fred is circled) Fred also responded to the claim of Clarence the Cat that he was somehow responsible for the Silver Cup award. "Mr. Cat has again put forth an absolutely unbelievable statement that he somehow single-handedly has helped this school win an award. He need to give proper credit where it is due. To the boys and girls of Skyview. I will work to make not just the library, but the entire campus a better place beginning with the cafeteria. We can do this together." Fred encourages everyone to locate their voter cards and come to the library next week and VOTE!
NOVEMBER 8, 2004 ELECTION RESULTS FRED THE DOG BIG WINNER!! Fred the Dog won a convincing victory last week defeating Clarence the Cat by an electoral vote count of 45 to 18. 11 electoral votes were not cast but would not have effected the outcome of the election. Clarence actually won the 4th grade electoral vote by a 10-8 count despite losing the 4th grade popular vote 21-14. Fred won 99 popular votes to Clarence's 49 to win 66.8% of the votes cast. Clarence had made some headway in swaying voters, but it was not enough. In the first poll taken, Fred had 72.8% of the vote compared with his final 66.8%, so Clarence gained 6% with his aggressive campaigning. Of the 202 eligible voters, 148 voted for a 73.2% turnout. Fred was very pleased with the results and promises to work hard for the students of Skyview. Clarence conceded that the race was over and wished everyone well. He starts his new position at Classical Magnet School on Wednesday.
