Vote for YOUR Library Mascot!

November 6-8 in the library.

  1. Register to vote in the library between now and October 29. Must be at least 3rd grade to vote.

  2. Receive your voter's card.

  3. Look for the posters describing the candidates.

  4. Come to the library and vote between November 6th and 8th.

Vote Fred the Republidog, Clarence the Democat, Springy Springman or Grandma Goodgrades- Independents.

Clarence the Democat's Platform

I have to start out by saying that I am a lucky cat.  I have experience as a mascot in the Richardson school system.  For the last two years I was a class mascot in a fourth grade class at Arapaho Classical Magnet Elementary School.  In my time there the class got good grades and did well on their tests.  When I was Library Mascot at Skyview two years ago the benchmarks began getting better. This is because of all the students that visited me for luck before the testing.  I want to continue bringing luck to the students here and I want to help make Skyview an "Exemplary" school. I want to try and make the food better in the cafeteria and extend recess time.  If you are behind me we can accomplish great things.  The Democats believe that we can make this a better school through working together and spreading the luck around to all. Vote for me to continue the work we have started.

Fred the Republidog's Platform

As a Republidog I believe that students are capable of helping themselves become better students.  I believe that by guiding you in the books you choose and being a good friend that I can help you to improve your test scores and learn more.  I think that everyone in the school is capable of good grades if they are willing to work to get them. During the last two years as mascot of the Skyview library the school has gone from "acceptable" to "recognized" and we are shooting for "exemplary."  I have done my part over the last two years to make this school a success. Like my opponent, I would like to see longer recess breaks, but not at the cost of losing more class time. I like the cafeteria food and I feel that it is improving all the time.  I would like to see more social activities at school and hope to promote them if I am elected mascot. I am trustworthy and loyal, just like all dogs, and I am sure these are the qualities you want in a mascot.

Springy Springman.  Independent Party Platform

Hello Skyview students. I want you to know that I stand for change.  If you are unhappy with things the last two years then I am the candidate for you. While some things have been pretty good here, there are other things that are not going well for some of you. You know what I mean. If you are in the group that feels underappreciated and unrecognized then I need your vote to make Skyview the school that it should be. I believe in hard work, good grades and recognition for a job well done. Don't settle for second best, why "dog" it when you can "spring" ahead?

Grandma Goodgrades.  Independent Party Platform

I'm not like the other candidates. I am not a professional politician. I'm just an old grandma who's been around awhile and seen a few things.  There are a few things I've seen that I don't like. Once Fred the Dog took office he never left his precious desk.  He never visited with the students in their classrooms deciding instead to stand guard over the candy. Even at this meager job he failed. Candy was always missing.  You don't have to be a professional mascot to see there were problems. Skyview, I have a "basketful of A's" for you. Together we are going to pass those tests and make them meaningful for you. I believe in a strong reading background so I will institute a higher checkout limit for a longer period of time. I will also reduce the price of losing books. We can make a difference and I ask for your vote in November.

FIRST POLL RESULTS IN!!!

Fred the Dog leads in first poll

A poll of 107 third and fourth graders shows that incumbent Fred the Dog holds an early lead. Fred received 48 votes or 44.8% of the total. 5th and 6th graders will be included in future polls.  Surprisingly, Springy Springman was second with 36 votes or 33.6% of the total. Springman, who has never held office, was elated with the news.

"This poll shows we have a great deal of support. We can and will catch Fred the Dog by election time," Springy said.

Running in third was Clarence the Cat. Clarence at 14.9% of the votes. This is Clarence's second try for the office of Library Mascot.

"We just have to work harder to get our message out," Clarence said. "We are early in the race and I intend on making Skyview the luckiest school in the district."

Grandma Goodgrades had a disappointing showing garnering just seven votes which is only 6.5% of the total.

"I want the students of Skyview to know that I care about them deeply. Their future is very important to me. I have many grandchildren of my own," Mrs. Goodgrades was quoted as saying.

Fred the Dog responded to the results by thanking his supporters and stating "I am humbled by the show of support.  I promise to wipe out the concept of luck and replace it with a concept of study and hard work to be successful. I think my last two years here at Skyview speak for themselves."

There proved to be quite a difference in the ways boys and girls voted. The great majority of girls voted for Fred which helps to account for his lead.

The results broke down this way:

Boys:

Springman: 49%   Fred: 31%    Clarence: 14%    Grandma: 6%

Girls:

Fred: 57%   Springman: 20%    Clarence: 16%    Grandma: 7%

By Grade:

3rd Grade:

Fred: 39%  Springman: 26%   Clarence: 25%    Grandma: 10.5%

4th Grade:

Fred: 48%   Springman: 36%   Clarence: 16%  Grandma: 7%

FRED QUESTIONS GIVEAWAYS

Today Fred the Dog questioned the free giveaway tactics some of the candidates are using. "It's trying to buy votes pure and simple" Fred said of the candidates who are giving away bookmarks and Lucky A's. "The other candidates cannot touch my record here at Skyview and they are resorting to bribing students to vote for them," Fred was quoted as saying.

Candidates like Springy Springman, who is popular with the 4th grade, said "the giveaways are fun and nothing more. No one is forcing people to vote for us. They show we are caring, fun mascots."

Grandma Goodgrades responded " Fred has failed to provide us with needed leadership over the last two years and this is his way of striking back. He knows we are making progress to defeat him."

Clarence the Cat has been known to give out a bookmark or two and says " I am lucky and the things I give the students may be lucky too. Good luck rubs off doesn't it?"

A new 5th and 6th grade poll is expected to be released this week.

OCTOBER 25, 2006

5th GRADE STRAW POLL:

NO SURPRISES

A small sampling of the 5th grade shows basically the same results as the 3rd and 4th grade poll with one exception: Grandma has some support among the 5th graders.  Fred got 44% of the vote compare to Springman at 31%. This is slightly less support than Fred has in the lower grades. Clarence took the biggest poll hit getting just 6% of the vote. The poll looks like this:

Fred: 44% Springman 31% Grandma 19% and Clarence 6%.

Boys:

Fred: 50% Springman 40% Grandma 9% Clarence 1%

Girls:

(tie) Fred & Grandma 33% (tie) Springman & Clarence 17%

OCTOBER 30, 2006

6th GRADE STRAW POLL: FRED'S AHEAD!

In another strong showing, Fred the Dog has a commanding lead in the 6th grade straw poll. Of the 20 6th graders polled, 55% said they would vote for Fred.  Clarence had one of his stronger showings carrying 25% of the vote. He was closely followed by Springy Springman with 20%. Grandma did not get a vote in this poll and continues to fall behind. In an attempt to drum up support Grandma said that she will "work to cut back on unnecessary testing" as part of her administration as Library Mascot.

"There are too many tests and not enough reading going on at this campus," Grandma was quoted as saying. Grandma picked up a Key endorsement by Terrell Owens who claims that he "catches" what Grandma says.

Fred the Dog was pleased with the results. "Despite attempts by my opponents to buy votes, the students at Skyview understand that we are getting better every year. I have been a part of that and will continue doing my part as Skyview pursues the goal of becoming an exemplary school."

Springy Springman picked up a key endorsement by the Dallas Mavericks who support his Independent bid for Library Mascot.

"The Mavs have always been an independent group" a spokesman for the Mavericks said, "and we feel Springy best exemplifies this spirit."

Clarence continues visiting classrooms and drumming up support in the tough 4th grade counties. He feels that his second bid for office will be successful.

"I feel like a part of this school,' Clarence said. "I was actually here before Fred and I hope to be here after him. I will help students pass these upcoming benchmarks just by rubbing my fur. Try it and see!"

NEWS

NOVEMBER 1st, 2006

THE CANDIDATES SPEAK!

LIBRARY MASCOT ELECTION NEWS!!!

November 1st

As the election draws closer the candidates are making more statements about holding the office of Library Mascot.

Fred the Dog

It has been a privilege to serve as Library Mascot these past two years at a time when Skyview has become a recognized school. I want to lead us to the next level: an exemplary school. I can do it with your help and support. The other candidates promise things like Magazine checkouts or buying more Shark books. What you need to know is that if you as students check out magazines, you may incur fines for damage. This would be like a new tax. There are also not nearly enough magazines to go around and classes that come to the library late in the week would never get a magazine. As far as buying shark books, we ALL want to see our favorite books in the library. However, the mascot can just suggest, Mr. Valentine is the final say on purchases and all of the kids at Skyview have to be served. Have you found more drawing books? More comic or Scooby-doo books? How about scary books? Those were bought during my time here. I will work for you if you elect me next week.

Springy Springman

I am running as an outsider. I haven’t held office before but I know how to have a good time and how to help you have a good time while learning. Although I don’t have the details worked out, I can promise you that Skyview will be THE place in Richardson for students who want to enjoy what they do.  While it’s true that I don’t have all my plans laid out for buying books or checking out magazines, I know that I can get the right people to help me accomplish this. I am supported by the Dallas Mavericks and they are winners as am I. We can “spring” forward into the new year if you will vote for me. I am the man who can lead the Library and the school into the TAKS tests this spring. Want a change in the way things are going? Vote Springy!

Grandma Goodgrades

Think about your granny for a minute. Is she wise? Does she guide you in making decisions? I am a grandma with a lot of experience in that area. Fred the Dog has said that he has led us to great heights. This old grandma says that things could have been better had Fred worked harder. He was elected and then stayed still for two years while everyone moved around him.  Grandma knows best and she knows that Skyview deserves a basketful of A’s. That is what I intend for everyone. We need a change in the number of checkouts so the little kids can get as many books as they want! Why put a limit on it? We have over 11,000 books? Let’s get them all checked out! Read more test less! Vote Granny!

Clarence The Cat

I have been clawing and scratching my way to the top of this race. I am a tough cat. I am a lucky cat. I made it though Halloween with no problems.  I have bookmarks for you and I would like to expand the number of parties held in the library for good behavior. We can pay for it by charging fines on books that are overdue.  I know this may seem like an unpopular idea but really, you might get a party if you’re lucky like me!  Fred would tell you he encourages you. I’d rather be lucky than good, wouldn’t you? I am the biggest of all the candidates and we all know the biggest is always the best. We can be an exemplary school. It starts by voting Clarence for mascot next week!

NEW STRAW POLL

A new straw poll with a small sample of 20 3rd and 4th grade voters  shows Springy Springman a surprisingly strong second place. Of the voters polled, 50% said they would vote for Fred while 35% said the would vote for Springy. Grandma and Clarence both did poorly in the poll but both hope to gain support in the upper grades.

In the first poll Fred got 44% of the vote and Springman got 33%. Fred seems to have gained votes away from Grandma and Clarence. Springman hopes to continue momentum now that he is in a solid second place.

POLL RESULTS:

FRED 50% (up 6%)  SPRINGMAN  35% (up 2%)   CLARENCE 5% (down 10%)  GRANDMA 5% (down 1.5%)

Among males in 3rd and 4th grade Fred held a 60%-30% lead over Springman. The vote is closer  among females in this poll with a 50%-50% split.

EXTRA!!!!!

November 15, 2006

FRED WINS AGAIN!!!

In a finish that reflected all the previous polling data, Fred the Dog won his second term as Library Mascot. Fred won with 45.8% of the vote and carried 8 out of 13 "counties" in the state of Skyview. Springy Springman finished strong with 37.4% of the total vote. Springy also won the 6th grade by 4 percentage points. He tied for the 5th grade lead but the lower grades were dominated by Fred. Clarence the Cat finished a disappointing 3rd place with only 11.8% of the vote. Grandma found no love anywhere finishing last at 5.9% despite trying her best to fit in with the other candidates.

Fred was elated at the news and promised to lead Skyview to "exemplary" status within two years.

"The students at Skyview have spoken and they are happy with the course we are on," Fred said in a statement. "I will continue to work with Mr. Valentine to make the library a fun place to be."

Springy thanked all his supporters and promised to be back. "I enjoyed the race and hope to run again. I want to say a special thanks to all my 6th grade friends who supported me and nearly helped me pull off the upset. Have a great year!"

Clarence the Cat could not be reached for comment as all of his luck has apparently run out. He was last seen heading for Plano.
