Essay Topics
Authors draw from their own life and personal experiences to write books. For example, J. K. Rowling gave her main character, Harry Potter, her birthday and H. J. Ralles took a vacation in the Honduras and put a Honduran character in her next book.  Find evidence of this in "Castaways" & discuss it.
The book opens in 1600's and then jumps to 1800's. Find evidence to support the author's description of life in one or both of those times.
What happened in the world during the time between the curse in the 1600's and The Village in the 1800's? What major events will Ned and Ben face in the years to come after this book, especially in other countries?
Choose two characters to compare and contrast. Discuss how they changed through the story and make a statement about why the author included the character rather than letting other characters do that part.
Discuss three ways the author keeps Ben, who's immortal, realistic & human. Why doesn't he do the same for Ned?
